Blackberry

Botanical name: Rubus fruticosus

Crown and root system: This is a hearty climbing plant that grows rapidly.  If you wish to grow it as a climber it needs adequate support and trellising.  It has lovely white flowers.

Growing regions: All over the country.

Ripening date: During the summer months.  The fruit is red and darkens during the final stages of ripening.

Planting in a container: May be planted in a container.

Recommended planting season: All year round.

Special care: Regular pruning in order to direct the plant’s growth.

Varieties sold in our nursery:
Navaho: This is a non-prickly climbing plant.
Wild blackberry:  A prickly plant with small, sweet fruit.

Good to know:
The shelf life of the fresh fruit is relatively short, but it can be frozen for long periods of time.  It is excellent when eaten as is, but also made into jam or mixed into a shake.
