Botanical name: Syzygium jambos
Crown and root system: This is an evergreen tree with a somewhat droopy crown. Its flowers are lovely with bright green leaves, although juvenile leaves have a beautiful Bordeaux color. Because of its dense foliage and moderate dimensions, it can also be used as a hedge.
Growing regions: Areas with a moderate climate, not extremely hot or cold.
Fruit: Ripens at the beginning of the summer. The fruit is yellowish in color, as large as a plum, with a rich fragrance of roses. It has a delicate flavor (the seeds are especially fragrant).
Planting in a container: May be planted in a container.
Recommended planting season: All year round.
Special care: As with most summer fruit trees, the rose apple tree is also preferred by fruit flies. The fruit flies can be almost completely neutralized using a dedicated fly trap that can be hung from one of the branches. The trap is safe and easy to use. Another way to protect the fruit from flies is to use special netting which is sold in agricultural supply stores.
Good to know:
In India, people fill the fruit with a custard seasoned with cinnamon and cardamom and serve this for dessert.
