Lemon

Botanical name:  Citrus x limon

Crown and root system:  This is an evergreen tree with a small round crown. Its root system is non-invasive.

Growing regions:  Most parts of the country except for those with extreme climatic conditions, hot or cold.

Ripening date:  Throughout the winter months; the exact date depends on the variety.

Planting in a container:  May be planted in a container, in a place that is protected from winds and accessible to insects to promote pollination.

Recommended planting season:  All year round.

Special care:  We recommend using Confidor as a preventive treatment in early spring, according to manufacturer’s instructions (the compound can be bought in any agricultural supply store).

Varieties sold at the nursery:
Eureka:  This is a prolific variety that yields a relatively large fruit with a high juice content and a peel that is not too thick.  Has seeds.  It yields fruit in early winter and the fruit remains on the tree for months.  Under optimal growing conditions it can produce several waves of fruit during the year.
Villa Franca seedless:  This is a medium-sized fruit with an elongated shape and a stem at the end.  The peel is rough with a yellow color.  Has very few seeds.

Good to know:
The heaviest lemon in the world was found in 2003 in Kfar Zeitim.  The lemon, which was grown by a farmer named Aharon Shmuel, weight about 5 kg. – more than the weight of the average human head.  The lemon’s circumference was 74 cm. and it was 35 cm. tall.  This achievement was recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records.
