Common Walnut

Botanical name:  Juglans regia

Crown and root system:  This deciduous shade tree has a large and impressive crown with an aggressive root system.

Growing regions:  Can be grown in most parts of the country, but requires numerous cold snaps in order to bear fruit – recommended that it be grown at an elevation of at least 400 meters above sea level.

Ripening date:  During the fall.

Planting in a container:  Not possible as the tree is too big.

Recommended planting season:  May be planted all year round.

Good to know:
In ancient Greece the walnut was known as “karyon,” which roughly translates as “head” because its appearance is reminiscent of the human brain, with the shell serving as the protective skull.
