Avocado

The Haskelberg Nursery is the largest producer of avocado saplings in Israel, and provides around two-thirds of all avocado saplings for agricultural areas.  Additionally, we are part of international projects to raise avocados in South Africa, Peru and elsewhere.

Botanical name: Persea americana

Crown and root system: The size of the crown and root system depends on the variety.  There are small varieties that can be grown in a container, varieties with a moderate crown and some that are suited for use as shade trees.

Growing regions: Most parts of the country except for colder areas.  Sensitivity to cold depends on the variety.

Ripening date: Fall to winter months, depending on the variety.

Planting in a container: Smaller varieties may be planted in a container.

Recommended planting season: Most of the year except for cold months.

Varieties sold in our nursery:
Ettinger: This is a shade tree with a broad crown and an extensive root system.  It is a large and smooth fruit with a green skin, and ripens at the beginning of the season.
Hass: This tree as a medium-large crown with a moderate root system.  It bears fruit in the middle of the season.  The fruit is small with a rough skin that darkens when ripe.  It has a high fat content.
Reed: This tree has a medium crown with a moderate root system.  At the end of the season it bears fruit that is round with a green skin, which hardens and separates from the fruit when ripe.
Wurtz:  This tree has a small crown that is suited for growing in a container, in a spot protected from the wind.  It bears fruit in the middle of the season, producing fruit with a smooth green skin similar to the Ettinger.
BL:  This tree has a small, droopy crown that is suited for growing in a container, in a spot protected from the wind.  It bears fruit in the middle of the season, producing fruit that becomes dark and rough when it ripens, similar to the Hass variety.
Tova:  This tree has a small crown that is suited for growing in a container.  It bears fruit in the middle of the season, producing fruit with a smooth green skin similar to the Ettinger.
NN39:  This tree has a small crown that is suited for growing in a container.  It produces fruit with a smooth green skin similar to the Ettinger.

Good to know:
Avocado fruit starts to soften about two-three days after being picked.  If you wish to slow down the ripening process choose frut with a branch of 1-2 cm. and place it in the refrigerator.  If you want to speed up the process, keep the avocado outside the refrigerator in a well-lit spot.
