Acerola

Other names:  Acerola, Barbados cherry, Amazon cherry

Botanical name:  Malpighia glabra

Crown and root system:  This is a dry season deciduous tree with a small crown and a medium root system. The acerola flowers bloom in a lovely shade of pink and the shrub can be used as an ornamental bush with decorative fruit.

Growing regions:  Most areas of the country except for colder areas.

Description of the fruit:  Small red fruit with a sour-sweet flavor.

Ripening date:  Summer months.

Planting in a container:  May be planted in a container, in a place that is protected from the wind.

Recommended planting season:  All year round.

Special care:  We recommend trimming once a year after fruit-bearing season has ended.

Good to know:
Acerola fruit are rich in vitamins A and C, in and South America acerola juice is considered to be a health drink – similar to Israel’s orange juice.
